American Family Insurance has recently launched KnowYourDrive, a new usage-based insurance program, with technology from connected-car company Automatic.

KnowYourDrive is available this February in Arizona and Indiana, with more states set to be announced soon. Members, who will get an initial five percent discount for enrolling, as well get an Automatic plug-in adaptor to plug in their car as an on-board device.

The American Family-branded, smartphone app collects data, tracks your driving behavior, and helps you learn safer driving habits. Depending on how you drive, you can earn up to 40% in savings on your car insurance. If you’re seen as an unsafe driver, they teach you safer driving habits and tips on how to improve and start saving money.

American Family’s previous attempts into usage-based insurance included the Teen Safe Driver program, which used cameras to help parents manage teen drivers. That program has been sunsetted according to Kelly Lien, American Family VP of personal lines product management, as American Family begins to explore this new type of program using telematics.
